How to Decide What Goes and What Stays Before Moving Day

Sometimes you just have to let go. Don't make moving day harder by bringing everything with you; this is how you decide what goes and what stays.

Are you planning a move?

Moving is one of the most stressful things you can face in your entire life. And, it’s a fact of life. In fact, about thirty-eight percent of surveyed Americans plan to move in 2021.

But, how do you decide what to take with you? Let’s go through how to sort through your stuff before moving day.

Sort Through The Chaff

The first thing you should try and do when decluttering is find an organizational strategy that works for you. The easiest strategy is to divide between take, throw away, give away or donate, and storage. That way, you’ll be able to make the tough decisions more easily.

There are other methods you can use to sort through your stuff, of course. These include:

  • The KonMari method
  • The closet hanger method
  • The easter egg method
  • Capsule wardrobes
  • The one in, one out method
  • The packing party

Just look into your different options, and you’ll be sure to find a decluttering method that works for your needs.

Get Rid of the Old

No matter what (unless it’s a very sentimental item), you don’t need to bring anything broken or stained to your new home. You’re not going to get it repaired.

If you have clothing hanging about that doesn’t fit you or anyone in your household, it’s time to donate it. Or, if you have outdated electronics hanging around that you’ve already replaced, it’s probably time to donate these products so someone else can get some use out of them.

If you have any expired products, such as cosmetics, it’s time to throw them out. The same is true with any food items that are near or past their sell-by date. Being frugal’s not a bad thing, but when you’re paying to move things around you won’t be saving any money.

Be Careful

You may find yourself accidentally throwing out something important by accident. That’s why it’s important to be very careful when you go through your stuff to move.

Papers, for example, are one thing that you may throw out that may turn out to be very important. That’s why you need to go through your papers carefully, even if it’s time-consuming or tedious. You don’t want to end up throwing out important medical records or anything else you may need in the future, after all.

You also don’t want to lose anything you’ll need imminently. Try to keep everything you need on a day-to-day or weekly basis in your own car, so you won’t end up freaking out or digging through a storage unit in the middle of the night.

Get Ready For Moving Day Today

With these tips and tricks, you should be completely prepared to tackle your next moving day. Just get a head start, to make sure that you’re not stuck trying to get things done at the last minute.
